    Late war FSU Lafette (44 i think)

    Good evening gents, Late war lafette for your perusal. Bit of a crispy one that has had an over paint I believe.

    The question is.....do I try to sort it out and clean it up a bit (that was optimistic by the way as its got pitting under the paint all over)

              I reckon the corrosion under the paint is even enough that its probably lived together all its life. Their are some very small traces of the darker yellow under the light stuff its now wearing.

                Very nice and very rare mount you have there. It appears that it has been painted after it was recovered possible from water water. I would just leave it alone. The metal would start to get very thin if you removed the pitting.

                  Yes that's one of the things I was wondering about, how much is actual pitting and how much is crapped out paint layers beneath the now top coat? Could be a can of worms. And to check I would have to bugger up the existing top coat

                  Having said that, apart from a couple of points it does actually fold, legs do extend with no sign of massive corrosion, and I believe that the wing nut castings for the rear legs were pretty rough cast in the first place. Elevation and search fire mechanism actually function correctly, and the top inner mount is free to move with no crunching with a working piston. trigger dowel replaced? or scraped
                  back?
                  The couple of points mentioned are not visible in the pics, it is missing the forward bolt for the traverse (easily put right) and the search fire mech has a small tack weld at the back holding it to the track (not so good news)

                  Interesting to see how rough the construction is compared to the early manufacture, rear legs are not drawn tube but rolled and seam showing, with a top collar fitted with a couple of quick welds. Things like that.

                  The really good news was that it was damned cheap for a lafette with the "new model" legs. Shame the "new" layer of paint was applied.

                    Tim I would just fix what needs to be fixed and leave it at that.
                    Even if you disassemble it and repaint it you will still have the same thing. I repainted one of my gebirgslafettes and it is allot of work. I think you will find allot of items that may break before comming apart even if you soak them in liquid wrench
                    There may be some visible stamps left as well they are easy to find if you know were to look . If you got a good deal that is great I paid an arm and a leg forthe ones I have.

                      Yes, I have to confess that I am leaning towards, minor repairs as it were.

                      Had another rummage the other day, FSU stamped to the side of the tripod head where the front leg connects, no other found so far, may be too far gone or layered in paint.

                      It was actually cheaper than an Mg34, 41 dated one he had for sale, probably from the Norwegian batch from the colour it was painted.
