Pic's of the holster as requested. The GI put his name and S/N inside as you see.

Hello Historynut, Since you have the GIs Name and service number you should research him to find out his service record. It could contain vital information on where he possibly picked up the early P-38. Just a thought that you might like to follow..BILL

            Yes Bill,
I was thinking I should check the National Archives. If something comes up I will post it.

                Hi their,

Sorry if its a stupid question but not too up on American service rules

I would think it means he has not been assigned yet to Infantry, Artillery or Armor.

                    Interesting,

So you were called up, did basic, and then you were selected? Did they have to do aptitude tests etc?

Did the same happen if you enlisted by choice, or could you pick?

                    Cheers in advance

It is now a shooter, so go shoot it, and enjoy the bang BANG. At least the holster is as found....I got a shooter years ago with sights set at 50 yards, to hit anyone close I have to am at their knees . Good scoop regardless, you went into it with eyes and wallet open . The finish on my shooter is worn from combat...none left actually, but as found and everyone needs just a shooter they can carry or take out and not worry about . Mine will stay nekked as is as long as I use it....your find just Might save your life some day...so how is the bore?
I might suggest a repro holster to carry it in and save this one at your man- cave to keep it from further deterioration. If you ever turn it, you can reunite them again, or just sell the pistola. Holster is worth in the neighborhood of half or so of the retail you paid, so you're not into it too deep. I wonder if there were a couple more pips or a plate attached to just above the hold down flap strap ?(2 additional holes )

The guy was a Machinist so I'd guess he went to Mobile unit that would use his skills.

The bore is excellent. I will keep this in the Nightstand....too bulky to carry.

Actually it is one of the safest guns made and not that bulky to carry, but the repro tan holsters are less than 40.00 . I have a west german shoulder holster that works great . (if you don't want to get a repro holster.)
