Dou 1942 k98

Hi Guys,

Can any one give me some more information on this K98,I know that DOU is the maker and 42 is the year. It's seems to have no bluing in sight which is strange? Serial is only 3388 and all parts appear to be matching. Any idea of value? and also what dose the "2P" on the barrel mean?

Hi,

Because of the date I would have said it should be blued but it recalled an incident from back in the 70's working as a gunmaker.

A customer brought in his 12 bore on which he had used rust remover on the barrels - bad move as the blue is really a controlled rust process so he had bright barrels!

Perhaps this K98 has undergone a similar process?

Bluing for the most part would tend to adhere better on the earlier machined parts than the later stamped ones......Of course part of this could be readily attributed to better manufacturing processes...However, the older rifles did tend to see more handling and longer service life...Bodes

I would look for any indication of disassembling....Odd that there isn't any trace of bluing, and only sparse areas where the steel has turned brown....I had a well used '37 dated Boriswalde mauser and that still had some bluing......The recoil lug is in the white as well, but they were on early rifles....That along with bayonet lug and butt plate....I don't recall right off hand when they started bluing the recoil lugs....My gut is the steel has been chemically cleaned....Bodes

Really strange as consistent throughout, i'm surprised that there is not much surface rust unless it has been treated with something
