and with the proper paperwork, it will remain just as is.

I have a twin to yours. My Dad bought mine in 1962 for $17.50! I still have the paperwork from the Armory. These early Carbines in original condition are getting tough to find these days. Jump on it!!

nice carbine.I bought my first from the nra.cost five dollars to join with a years subscription and you could buy either a m1 or a 1911 for $20. i choose the m1.i think i sold it to a friend for $30, i think the year was either 1963 or 64

I know several retired policeman from our area that were able to purchase carbines from the govt for $35 this was in 196o's just after the riots in Detroit and Toledo . I believe it was around 1967 ? Some of them still have them. Vitts

Make sure the rounds feed smoothly from the magazine into the breach ? Sometimes on these older ones you have to hold/push the mag forwards for it to feed properly. Last time i bought a carbine was $100 years ago.

Hi Gents,

Pushing up this old thread, willing to dig more into the "hand carved"

markings on that stock.

From what i can see so far, my eyes would read something like "0-4783",

but as for what's carved below, my poor eyes cannot read.....

My questions are,

if i am correct in my reading, would you know what these numbers

could possibly mean, where could i search or dig further ?

Can your hawkeyes read below ?

Any help or leads of yours would be highly appreciated.

I believe that the O would be the initial of the GI's last name and the 4 digits are his last 4 numbers of his serial number.

when the question was asked thats what came to mind his serial number. but when i was in the army 1969 they made us memorize our rifles serial number?

I understand 4 digits won't be enough to search in todays available databases.

What is nice with walnut though, is that the wood fiber on this stock goes vertically, making it probably possible to isolate the hand carvings....

If i'm able to get better shots, with a USB magnifier or another techno, old or new, scrapping with a pencil on a piece of paper, moulding the writting below (being open to any other non "harming" ways to proceed....),

do you think we could read any further what looks to be a name under these digits ?

My eyes do read "ing" at the end, but these are only my eyes.....
