K Suffix Muzzle Marked SS PPK

On November 25, 2010, I posted a description of a newly discovered SS issued PPK to the pinned SS PPK thread. It can be found as post # 21 on that thread. A bit of new discussion has popped up on a thread intended to discuss a COA provided for a SS issued PPK. I'm starting this new thread in an attempt to avoid any further hijacking of that thread.

Matt, you asked for photos of the slide showing the serial number. I assume that you refer to the right side flat. No photos needed, because there was no serial number present there. Just as the earlier muzzle marked variations. If the factory had applied serial numbers there, the muzzle marking would not have been necessary. That began with the "K Under" variation at approx serial number 206 XXX/K.

In any case. a color photo of one of the "K Suffix Muzzle Marked" PPK's is present in the Black Book along with an inset of the muzzle marked number.

Matt, would it be possible to pull post #21 off of that thread and post it here complete with photos?

    Steve,

Thanks for starting a new thread!

That's why I asked for photos of the slide! That's answers that question.

While I was looking back at the pinned thread on the SS/RSHA pistols for the photos, I looked back at the first posting.
Here's what I had listed under variation 3:

    Variation 3-
Muzzle ring serial number, "Crown/N" proofed, high polish finish, in the million serial range 100xxxx. Still pre-suffix "K" which first appeared around serial number 1728xxk.

So, the pistol that you are describing as "muzzle ring, K suffix" would fit into this category. Only difference is the serial number would be above 1728xxK range. That is when the "K" first started to appear on the end of the serial number.

So, I think we just need to add to this posting, that the "K" suffix was added to the frame serial number after 1728xxK, and continued up until 206xxxK range. (which is when the "K" under started to appear).

    Does that sound accurate?

    Matt

PS- I can't edit threads, since I'm no longer a moderator here. I'll contact Bill and Willi and see if they can do it?

Great Matt...You've got it. Except that at the present time, the serial number range has not been proven to go all the way up to #206 XXX K. In the future, K Unders might be found below 206 XXX /K. So many guns disappeared during the war, that in the absence of documents not yet found, we'll never know precisely when factory changes actually took place. So far, all the guns of this variation only occur in the 192 XXX K range.

(I would just post new pics here, but my membership has lapsed, so at the present, I'm not allowed to post pics.)

        Steve,

Certainly. The serial ranges are just estimates of course. I think in the variation 1, I didn't even list serial ranges, since there just isn't enough of them to form a good range from.

Thanks for you help Steve. Glad we cleared that up. Clear as mud!

I sent Bill a PM to see if he can move the photos and update the pinned thread here. I just want to have as accurate information as possible for everyone here.

Also as a side note, on the PP; in my thread, and also on your COA, we both mention that Walther starts to add the full serial number to the slide around 220xxxP. However, since then, we have seen some examples as early as 217xxxP with the serial number on the slide.

        Matt
