Hi guys, I'm considering buying this BYF 44 police P38 and would appreciate any comments that you might have. I was at a show recently and 2 different dealers told of the same P38 that was at the show that a private seller was trying to unload. (no pun intended) They both said it was hoaked up and probably came out of Russia. I just don't want to get caught in the same situation. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the pics. From what I can see, the "eagle/L" and "eagle/N" look a bit funny to me.
The "eagle/N" the left and right wings look crooked? Perhaps it's just a double strike? But it just looks odd to me.
On the "eagle/L" the "L" looks a bit large. Also, the feathers should be equally spaced apart.
Just an fyi- I usually don't like the "white" added to the lettering. It can hide a LOT!
I've attached a pic of what the "eagle/L" should look like.

Agreed! Many of these are known fakes. I to do not like the large "L". And most of legit E/Ls are in a lower serial range.
Hopefully Leon will chime in. Otherwise go to the P.38 form before spending your hard earned money!

It is in the upper range of E/Ls. I don't really like the stamps from what I can see in the pictures. It should be a phosphate gun but it looks like it has been cold blued.
A lot of the byf44s in the lower NLS range get made into police guns.
If I had time right now, I would do a photo comparison to show the difference in the stamps.

Skiffer,
That's a good idea!
My advice, be patient. Don't rush into something. Take the time to learn what to look for. These forums are probably your best source for info. But a good set of books to have on the P38, is the set by Warren Buxton. (God Speed)
If you look up old threads both here, and also on the P38 forum, you'll probably find an example of just about every P38 variation made.
