    looking to buy p.38 help

Hi I am new to the fourm and new to collecting. I have a handfull of k98's and now I am looking to buy my first p38. First thing I schould ask is are there any good books that cover the handgun? how much to pay and what codes are more disreible? I see a lot of them at gun shows and the price seems to be reasonable (for a new collector). but I know from my k98 collection there are the many different levels of the same thing. could someone give me the skinny on the p38.
    Thanks in advance, Dave

    Hi Dave,
Welcome to the forum if you haven't been welcomed allready! The 'Bible' for P38s is the three volumne set by Buxton. These were reprinted a few years ago so you can pick a set up for a fairly reasonable price. The earlier pistols are very highly sought after. These would be coded HP(for Heers Pistole) very rare...$2,000 plus these days, 480 code up to $1500, and then the AC series starting in 1940. There is also a late war AC 45 code which is known as the ZERO series, and these are also quite sought after, $1500+.
The Buxton books will give you the rundown on all the variations(and there are a lot!) so as I said they are the books to get. War year P38s can still be had for fairly reasonable prices....say 450 -650 for nice pistols.

    Cheers
    Gary

      Welcome to the forum.

About P38s, there are many different variations, and prices can range from common examples ($450) to some of the rarer ones ($2000+)
Also, condition is everything on these. Matching mags can be found on earlier Walthers (zero series, 480 code, AC no date, AC-40 added, AC40, AC41, and AC42)

The reading material that Gary mentioned, is probably the best reference book set out there. You basically only need to get volumes I and II for now. Volume I covers the Walther production, and Volume II covers Mauser and Spreewerk production.

Also feel free to ask any questions here on this forum, as we have many knowledgeable collectors here who collect P38s.
When you're ready, we can start talking about holsters and magazines too! (a whole 'nother field of collecting!!!)

      Matt
