Help With an M1 Carbine Please!!!

    Hello all,

This M1 carbine belongs to a friend of mine (not for long though ). We were both wondering if any of you could help date it for us and perhaps give us a little more information on it. It is all matching numbers wise. Any and all help that you all could provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers,
    Greg

The serial #. Sorry for the crappy photo but it was cold in his basement and my hands shook a little.

          Greg:

          Congrat son the nice carbine.

I am not sure where to start. First of all, Marlin is likely NOT the maker. Marlin made the barrel. The maker will be found just above the serial number. It is covered by the rear sight. Do not try to remove the rear sight, it is staked on. It is likely a rebuilt rifle based on the bayonet lug and the rear sight. Many rifles were rebuilt after the war. That is not a bad thing. Is there a stamp (cartouche) on the buttstock anywhere? Look on the side where the op rod handle is. Also, can you post some pictures of the trigger group? That will help the ID. More information will help the analysis.

            Comments on Carbine

            Greg,
The serial # of your carbine is early in the IBM range of assigned #'s. It is quite possible that the Marlin Bbl. is original to the receiver, as IBM used bbls. from Marlin, as well as Buffalo Arms when they ran short of their own. I have an example of this.
From the pic's shown, this rifle exhibits characteristics of either a very late production, which it is not, or an arsenal rebuild. It would have been issued with a type I rear sight. The adjustable rear sight would have been added as a field modification, or during the arsenal rebuild. Of course, the Type III front band with bayonet lug is indicative of an arsenal rebuild.
There were some IBM recievers subcontracted by Auto-Ordinance. From the shot of your S/N, it does not appear yours is one of those. Altho the marks might be disguised by some of the crud there.
Give us a shot of the right side, and a look at the markings on the stock there (if any) It should have a cartouch on the right stock, and on the left side, in the sling well, some markings there, as well. Too, we can see if it is "High Wood", or Low.
This looks like a really good example of your typical G.I. carbine. Been thru WWII, and rebuilt for the Korean Conflict. Look at the insides, let us know the marks on all the pieces. This can be a lot of fun.

I promise you, carbines are addictive!!!
Let us have a look at the stock!!!

              Thank You!!!

              Hello gents,

Thanks so much for your help. Unfortunately I don't have any additional pics at the moment but I can arrange to take some more. Either way I think that for the price he's asking I will take it regardless.

              Thanks again.

              Cheers,
              Greg

                Greg,
Keep us posted on your purchase. When you get the carbine, make more photos, take it apart and let us know what it's made of (which different mfgr's.)

                Good Luck Dude!!!

                Ronnie
