    FG42 ground found

    Hello Folks,
I have a good German friend who dug up a FG42, and is looking to sell it. I'll post pictures tonight, so you'll have an idea of what he is trying to move. It would have to be to a country where dewatted receivers are allowed (not the US), as he doesn't want to chop it up.
My question for fellow collectors: What is the best venue for legally selling this beast? He asked me to check on this side of the Atlantic to see if I could find a buyer, but obviously an unregistered FG42 isn't possible for sale to US collectors.
Should I just post it on the Estand, with caveats on what countries can/should buy it? Any advice would be appreciated - thanks.

Are ground dug weapons subject to firearms laws? I assume it's condition is such that it could never be fired again?
Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.

I might be wrong but I think that even in the UK and the rest of Europe it would still have to be "deactivated" by law no matter if it's ground dug or not. This wouldn't mean that he would have to chop the reciever up but it would probably mean plugging the barrel, welding the bolt shut etc..

          Robert,

Does your friend's post code read something like 45XXX? If so, I think I know the piece and it has been deactivated according to German law. Judging by the condition it was in when I saw it, it could never be made into a working firearm again.

          Look forward to the images.

          /David

Thanks for the inputs, gents. In the US, it is illegal to weld it up or in any other way make it permanently inoperable; if it wasn't registered prior to 1968, then it's an illegal weapon. For those countries that can modify it so it can't be shot, then possibly it can be purchased and legally displayed. But - I'm no expert on foreign law, hence my questions.

This rifle is in Stuttgart, David, if that's where you saw it. s/f Robert

Here are the pics, which are taken from the photo prints he gave me. I've asked for digital pictures, but these will give you a rough idea of what he has - s/f Robert

That should be left alone. As is. Please PM each other about what happens to it.

Gene, are you suggesting it not be discussed further on the forum, or that it shouldn't be cut up?

Both actually. Let's not get any "authorities" involved in this issue. I'd hate to see it get cut up or butchered, so any talk of where this amazing piece of history ends up should be done privately. Just a heartfelt request.
