Hi, i was wondering if it was possible to have some feedback about my MG42. Rather new to having an interest in this field, I am assuming I have bought a WW2 MG 42 rather than post war mg53 or some other mistake. Many parts visible and invisible ie inside such as internal trigger mech etc have marks including what appear to be german manufacturers codes. There are a few bits which have BK or K in or without circle which I realise are postwar Yugoslavian, this is on the bit you pull to cock ( dont know correct name), and one part of the trigger mounting. Other marks are COF, BPR, FNJ, HEC ( bipod) PJ (underlined) and various numbers and some waffenampts. The butt I have no idea about, it seems very old stress cracked but the matching serial number, EDB and waffenampts seem almost too good to be true. I was also a bit concerned as parts of the guns finish seems almost immaculate, the bluing or surface coating seems to have survived very well. It was covered in lots of thick grease which I have removed. Thanks for any comments or votes of confidence.

just while I try and work out how to attach pictures here, the serial number marking etc are DF 8290d AR, which I think should be Mauser 1944? is there a list of specific serial numbers anywhere which could narrow down production date? this is kind of etched into the side of the main part, stamped into the cover, and looks like hand punched into the grip on the feedtray. and also stamped into the butt

Hello,
You are correct, it's a Mauser made Mg42 manufactured in 1944 that's been used post war
by the Yugos.
Using Folkes vol 2 the serial range for Mauser in 1944 is 6999a - 412e.
Making yours from the end of 1944.
It's missing the AA finger/ladder sight.
IMO the buttstock is (wood work) Yugo with Mickey Mouse stamps, however (the release button) looks WW2 German so I would suggest the metal work on the buttstock is WW2 German. The Yugos have reused/refurbish the metal work in the buttstock.
The bolt is WW2 German, a Gustloff made one.
Any markings on the barrel?
If the barrel is also WW2 German that's a good score as the bolt and barrel are very often Yugo ones.
Well done, a tasty 42!
Jonathan.

Thanks very much for that Jonathan. I'm glad I was right , I wasnt sure how much stampings and stuff is faked. Which sight is missing? The front has the flip up bit, the rear has the extending bit with number scale front and back that really wants to take off my fingers when it snaps shut. This has a waffenamt on it. It has the mounting for the front plug in aa sight too. Unfortunately because of deactivation the barrel is fixed in place which means I can't examine it very well for stamps, I can see a small 2 in a square I think near the breech end, that's about it. The dog is buffy, she is not a big fan of the gun tbh. Very much appreciate the feedback
