    Scope

Yes it appears to be a correct scope for Bavarian sniper. Photo of similar scope on page 43 Robert Spielauer sniper scopes book

      Hi

Thanks for the reply. The auction house answered my query regarding this item by saying they think it is from one of the smaller manufacturers? Not sure if I am 100% convinced by the reply. They did send me a photo of the same type that passed through their hands in 2012 so it maybe is a good one. I could find nothing on the web relating to this manufacturer C P GORZ Berlin.
I believe the gentleman you mention produced 2 books re sniper scopes one covering 1914 to 1939 and another 1939 to 1945 do you know which one has the image like the one shown?
      Regards

As already mentioned this Goerz scope is for the Bavarian Gew98 sniper. The price was really attractive, congratulations if you purchased it, that was a bargain!

The scope bases are probably the most complicated ones that were used with the Gew98. If you want to see how a complete rifle looks like, compare it with this one here: http://www.hermann-historica.de/aukt...db=kat63_s.txt

If you decide to part with the scope, please let me know. Just recently I purchased a scope case for these scopes.

As a short side notice, this scope mount was also the origin of the Austrian WWI sniper design. They used the Goerz patent in a slighly modified way.

As you correctly say the scope was for a Gew98 and as I wanted one for a K98 I did not buy it. I did look at it and the optics looked very good. With the buyers premium the total would have been around £283 not sure if that is considered a good price or an expected one. Another reason for not buying was there were no mounts so I had no idea how easy to mount onto a K98. About 3 years ago the same auction house had the same scope serial number 6952 and on selling this went for under half of yesterdays price. There was online bidding for this so you could have bought it and had it shipped out. The auction house is a reputable firm. I wish I had bid on lot 7308 the SS helmet thinking after the auction that is was a very good price.

I would have paid 500 Pounds for that scope. Pity you didn't post it before the auction ended. It's a really rare scope.

I had a look at the hamlet and was pretty sure it was a fake so don't worry you didn't miss much. Also had a look at the scope but wasn't ww2 so took no more interest got a pair of wire cutters for a nice price though

I know what you mean regarding the helmet. Today the fakes are getting better and better making it more difficult for us. The scope was listed as K98 WW2 which obviously it was not but nevertheless looked nice with in my opinion very good optics. My interest was awakened by seeing WW2 K98 but alas. Hope you enjoy the wire cutters.
