I had mentioned to a friend earlier this year to keep an eye out for cheap K98 rifles. Just looking for something Russian captured to let my girlfriend hunt with. He found a rifle at a gunshow a Steyr K98 BNZ 4 for $350. The swastika's are present but there is a X on the receiver which is typical of K98. The barrel and receiver both match but nothing else is matching on the gun. The gun was going to be a birthday present to myself. When it got here the ffl could not find the bolt for the gun and we ended up filing an insurance claim. Now lets get down to the business of the SS contract rifle. I have noticed that most runes are present on the top of the receiver between the factory code and year, on the magazine floorplate and also underneath the barrel. Some totenkopfs may also appear on the side of the receiver. I think I may have been the first person to take down this rifle to inspect it. When I got home that night I realized it had a Sieg rune underneath the barrel which would be hidden from normal handling and inspection. I think that if the original owner knew it was an SS rifle it would have sold for a lot more $. Here are some pictures of the rifle and Sieg rune. Can someone give me a rundown on guns made at Mathausen Concentration camp? Also would like to know if the SS rune seems original.
