I'm not sure I remember the exact story on the Norton Luger, and maybe Alan remembers it, but in 1960 it was offered to a Carl Wilson for $4000, but at the meeting to purchase the pistol it had gone up to $5000 and Wilson got mad and turned it down. It was then purchased by Harry Jones and sold to Mr. Norton for $5500. Story is that Mr. Wilson admitted that it was the biggest mistake of his collecting career.

Mr. Norton liked engraved guns, and had E. C. Prudhomme engrave several guns in the collection, one being a Borchardt pistol. The .45 Luger could just as easily have ended up engraved.

Apparently the museum had no idea of the significance of the pistol until they were made aware of it.
The Norton Art Gallery is 4 blocks from where I grew up/parents still live!

      Wow small world!!

      The collection is quite impressive.

Also a fantastic collection of Fredric Remington and Charles Russell paintings and bronzes, as well as other paintings of the west. Really worth the time if you are in the area.

          Yes sir!

If I recall correctly it's, in fact, the largest Remington collection in the world.

That's nuts! My folks still live in the area as well! I grew up Near Pines Road, but spent many a Time at my parents Antique Shop on East Kings.
