    Hello,
Not being a firearms collector, I wanted to get your opinions on this Mauser P38 as to a value. I believe it to be worth around $750. It is in excellent condition and I believe all of the blueing is original. Also, why is the front sight post marked 4?
    Thank you,
    Dale

Yes it's hard to tell from the dark pictures. Could be a Russian dip. Can you take some pictures of it disassembled also? The 4 on the front sight is for the different sizes of front sights used.

It doesn't look like a Russian capture that was dipped, all the markings are strong and there's no sign of any previous corrosion. There aren't any visible force matched serials, and no Russian applied "X". The white paint is still on the "S" of the safety. Is the locking block matching and in the white?

From the pictures, it doesn't look dipped to me. The most telltale sign of a dipped P.38 is the locking block camming pin. The locking blocks are usually always in the white in a dipped gun but the camming pin will almost always be dark while it should be in the white in a Mauser.

                Regards, Leon

I don't believe it is dipped, but here are some better shots in full sunlight to show it better. Sorry I only took interior shots but forgot to take more of the outside. I believe it is a fully original piece still in excellent condition. I am posting it for a friend. Am I about right on my estimate of $750?

Not dipped. Locking block is in the white and the frame is slightly different shade. Nice photos!

                          Id say $800 at least.

Nice one. I paid 1000 for a slightly AC one a while back.
