Bringing this interesting thread back to the top with a question. Does anyone have an Erma EL 24 in single shot configuration with pre-1940 proofs? I have an E/N proofed single shot example, but I was wondering if anyone had any earlier examples.

To familiarize recruits with the operation and firing of a full size service rifle without the initial shock of using service ammo. The .22 lr initiated the recruit into loading and firing hopefully without the initial flinch. Then they went to full service ammo.

And .22lr is much cheaper then full service ammo, this can count it you have trainees shooting many thousands, if not hundreds of thousand of bullets annually.

makes sense to me i wish they reproduced them it would be cheaper to have my 98 shoot .22

Back to the question I posed in bringing back this thread. In researching the catalogs from the 1920s and 1930s, I find that Erma created at least two types of EL devices for rifles. The EL 24 was Ausfuhrung I. Was the EL 24 the Reichsheer designation and did it have magazines at first?
