        hello all/ need an opinion

        Hello all, it has been a while since I bought this carbine. I actually took it out and shot it about 2 weeks ago..last weekend, I tore it down to give it a really thorough cleaning since I will probably never shoot it again(it shot wonderfully though) and when I pulled it apart, it has an inland stamped trigger housing..what gets me is that the finish is identical to the barrell and reciever! I would think that I would have been able to see the color difference in them..they are identical. is it possible that it came like this new? I dont know anything about the history or manufacturing of M1 carbines , so I need your help...if it has been replaced, how does that affect its value? and would you suggest aquiring a winchester housing and installing it? any thoughts would be appreciated...chad

          Good to hear from you again. Glad to hear you've been enjoying your carbine. ---- Do not be discouraged!! You got the important and hard to replace parts. A trigger housing is pretty easy to find and replace. No, Inland would not have furnished a housing to Winchester for original mfg. They were too proud to do anything like that. Just shop around on the internet, or some of the vendors for a Winchester trigger housing.
          Did you take the rest of the parts out of the trigger housing?? What marks are on them?? If you'll list them, I can I.D. them for you.
          Still, if you bought this rifle for $750., even if you have to replace all the parts in the trigger housing, you got a hell-of-a-deal. It would be well worth your time and $$ to make it correct Winchester thru and thru.

            Ronnie...thanks for the heads up...I will look around for the housing..any thoughts on places I can look besides ( ebay )????? also, should the trigger housing be a type one or two? I dont know what this means, but I have seen a few listed differently..thanks..chad

              O.K. Chad, here are a couple of my fav's.

              As to type One or Two, Unless your s/n is VERY early, a type two would be fine. The most likely candidate would be a Type III. There was no clear defining line when they switched to newer designs. This applies to all the parts on carbines.
              There is a used Winchester Trigger Housing for sale at Riverbank (the first link) for $55. I'd go get that one. What about the rest of the parts in the trigger housing?? If you don't have a trigger spring tool, get one. They are cheap. That makes dis-assembly/assembly easy. Otherwise, the trigger spring is a PIA!! While you are at it, get a bolt disassembly tool as well. Impossible to take the bolt apart without this. You can check the extractor and firing pin that way.
