Chad,
Gene is right! It is an incredible steal! Is there a date on the barrel? Should be no bayo lug for WWII. And did Winchester stamp the date on their barrels? My Rockola and Postal Meter both have the the date stamped on.
There is a sight somewhere on the net (I can't find it right now) but it has about all the info you can imagine on the carbine and its manufacturers. This sight will give you an idea as to some prices out there.

Good luck,

Need S/N!!
Chad,
Only some of the very earliest Winchester carbines had dates on the bbl., and they were vertical, not horizontal. Otherwise, the "w" alone would be correct. The s/n would be the best indication of date of mfg.
If you can get the s/n. I can pretty well tell you what the rest of the rifle should have on it. Better yet, get a copy of Craig Reisch's book " U.S. M1 Carbines". It's less than 20 bucks, and worth $100.
BEWARE, Carbines are extremely addictive!!! Just ask Matt Weber!!!
Good Luck Chad!!
P.S. I also agree that in any case $750 would be a bargain if not an import. The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act.

M1 Carbine
Hi Chad:
I was like you I always liked the way the M1 was made and looked.I bought a General Motors or Underwood about 10 years ago.It was in perfect condition w/oiler and sling and a bunch of mags. Later after carefull exam I found it was imported back into the states, can,t remember the company. Anyway after reading and watching the History Channel and talking to Korean war vets about them hitting a commie and the heavy material they wore, they just got back up and kept attacking. The old colt 1911 had more hitting power than the M1.Its been discussed alot that the M1 was a military joke.
Anyway I sold it all for 450 and lost total interest in it. don,t own any long guns now and more than likely won,t,as I,m a pistol nut. As far as collecting a M1 would be a good choice, but to hunt with it would be a joke on deer or anyother big game. It really was a under powered weapon.Just my thoughts, Regards Danny

I have a suggestion for you, go to AuctionArms.com and look at the completed searches on Winchester Carbines for the past 90 days, this will give you a comparison and a ballpark price range, also check out gunbroker.com, you will need to register with them to do a search on completed items. Hope this helps, Chris.

Can You Say ADDICTED!!!!
Originally posted by Matt WeberRonnie is correct...... About the book! It is worth it's weight in gold!
If the rifle is all Winchester parts, and has early features as mentioned above, then $750 would be a steal!
Matt
PS-Ronnie is also correct,...... Carbines are very addictive!
