    k 98 cleaning kit

I was looking for a k98 cleaning kit, and ran across this one for 19.97
    http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=143341
I have bought items from sportsmans guide, I.E. a m1 carbine "original us goverment" 30 round mag. and when it arrived it was stamped made in usa, not coded for the goverment, so I am a little worried that it is some post war kit, opinions form the veteren collectors will be appreciated.

Hi Howell, from the photo it looks OK. Ask if they have any markings on the lid of the can. Usually these are maker marked and dated. There is some good info on these cans on the forum as Willi did a good thread about them recently.

    Cheers, Ade.

There are a lot of these kit now comming into the USA, that have no markings and are some commercial contract, no paint on the can just tinned.. I think they came out of EGYPT some years ago and are now beeing dumped on the market... But they are a repesentive RG34... Navy arms had 1000s.. BILL

        Hello all,

Does anyone have a full list of cleaning kit makers? It would be interesting to know who they were and when the various manufacturing simplifications were introduced. Yet another field of study!

          Petermac et al,

The following are the confirmed prime contractors of the Rg34 cleaning kit:

          - Gustav Appel, Maschinenfabrik (Named, codes 64, cnx, and CNX)

          - Braunschweigische Blechwarenfabrik GmbH. (Codes arr and rco)

          - Hawig, Hauswirtschafts-Maschinen-Gesellschaft mbH. (Logo, named, and code cmr)

          - Mundlos Aktien Gesellschaft, Nahmaschinenfabrik (Named and code ab)

          - Peter Schlesinger Metallwarenfabrik (Code ftd)

          - Unknown (Code KH)

          - Unknown Code Ky)

There are rumors of other prime contractors but as of this time I have been unable to confirm this information. There are also a number of subcontractors who manufactured component parts only. I have been researching the kits for several years and am in the process of writing a book dedicated to the Rg34. To elaborate on your question of modifications and variation would go into great detail (hence the book). I am always interested in receiving additional information or data on the Rg34 (additional makers, examples, variations, etc).
