the first two are wooden blanks and the third a dummy. The fourth bullet has me puzzled. Any ideas? Also, is the last bullet a dummy from an earlier era? Thank you, Brian

hlb would be the maker Metallwarenfabrik Treuenbritzen GmbH, Selterhof. S* means the case is steel with brass cover...I believe. 7 is the production batch. 41 is production year. Now, the red ring at the joint of the case and bullet is the "tropicalized " seal so is the red ring around the primer. The green ring...I believe is for hard core AP.
Yep, the last round would be a training round made from a reused case, as it has 1 ring around the case. I think they could reuse them till 3 times.

I believe the green stripe means the round is an "improved" round. The box will have a "v" on it. It was developed to make the machine guns cycle faster. It used a tubular powder rather than a flake power.
I also believe the red ring around the primer means "AP".
Here is a link to one that I have: http://lmd-militaria.com/page0099.htm

Yup.
2 wooden bullet blanks.
1 exercise cartridge
1 tropical armour peircing improved. (-v) typically meant for aircraft machine guns.
Primer annulus seal
Red is Smk = AP
Black is PMK= API
Green is Ss= Ball
Corresponding case mouth seal for tropical.
Black tip would be Tracer.
So in German coding this cartridge is
SMK-v fur tropen
And S* means Brass case.

I've heard the Kent book is good but a little dated and no colour. Being from a younger generation, I prefer colour hahah. Either way this book contains all kinds of coo info regarding German ammo. How to identify, history and development, etc etc.
it's only in German though so you need to use an English supplement. But the great photos make up for it!
