    7.92x57 bullet tip color question

Does the ammo match the box? I don't know what the bullet tip color represents? Thanks in advance for any information.

The black tip means AP, tracer. In this case, orange.

        Hi Wilhelm,

I believe the black tip, in this case, only means tracer. The "AP" rounds will have a red primer sealant.

Here is a link to info about a similar round except that it is 100/600. http://lmd-militaria.com/page725.html

        Regards, Leon

Smk rounds are AP. According to the label the rounds are AP (black tip) with orange tracer.

If you look at the german coloursystem leodes is right. The rounds have a red primer sealant. This denotes the AP part. The black tip is added for the tracer.
Yes the rounds are APT rounds but if you look at an AP round they only have a red primer sealant.

              Hi racefiets,

Here is a link to an example of an AP round that is not tracer: http://lmd-militaria.com/page722.html

Might be so for the 7,92 ammo only, as for LW heavy ammo black tip is AP and red ring is tracer or Tropen, depending on where the ring is.

I would say perhaps the one round from 1938 did not match the 1940/1 box

Potentially the other 9 rounds could be correct for that box.

Is there colored dye on or around the primer.

                      racefiets,

I didn't post that link because I was questioning your expertise. I only posted it so anyone who was interested could see the round you were alluding to. I'm sorry if you were offended by that.

As stated; painted tip is tracer and red primer pocket is AP. This is obvious on non-tracer AP rounds. The only way to tell the color of the tracer is if you have the box and matching rounds.

It is curious how they would use two different colour codes, depending if for smaller or larger ammo.

Most definitely black tip for tracer and red primer annulus seal for AP.

If they used another coding on larger cartridges it wouldn't surprise me, it's the Germans. Nothing simple.
