Dear Gentlemen,
I purchased the gun sight unseen, and be it willful ignorance or wishful thinking, I did not fully comprehend the extent of the condition of the bluing & pitting on the gun. I love it, but I am really nervous about hurting or causing any further wear to the finish. Operationally it’s completely sound. Obviously re-bluing or otherwise having the finish redone is out of the question. I’ve spent a lot of time just hand rubbing gun conditioner on her like how one would hand wax a nice set of leather dress shoes. The gun has responded very favorably to the oil, but still leaves a lot to be desired. The pitting in some spots is very deep with beveled rising bumps that then go inward – poor comparison, but like how the sides of a volcano is raised and a hole in the middle. There are sections that appear to be on the brink of actually rusting, most notably where the trigger guard detaches from the frame, and right under the front of the barrel on the slide. These sections have responded very favorably to the oil sessions, but as you can see, the bluing is almost completely gone from these parts.
I really wasn’t sure about the rhyme or reason for the wear on the bluing, but after handling it, it appears to me that the most worn areas are where one would actually hold the gun. I snapped a few pictures of me holding it consistent with my hypothesis. Anyways, I don’t know anything about its history asides from is original origin, it has no importation marks on it. It looks like some knucklehead attempted to scratch the lower serial number off, but did a terrible job as it’s still clearly visible. I think the pictures will speak for themselves, but she has a non-matching spine numbered magazine. The mag is in really good shape, the spring is super strong.
Note – if you have the gun 266297 or the mags for 301573 please pm me.
Any advice on how to best preserve or to prevent further wear & rust would be greatly appreciated. I’ve read that potentially soaking the gun with lube & letting it sit and soak in for a day or so could be good. I’m not really sure about that though, I guess it’s just habit to wipe excess oil off.
Oh... looks like i can't post / don't have permission to post attachments. Here is an attempt at my first time using the IMG bracket thing & imgur. ugh, well they posted but they are huge. Sorry for size, I have no idea how to resize them
Here is the album link just in case i messed up http://imgur.com/a/dMEsu
Thanks,
