In my experience if all things in terms of originality and condition are equal - a Viet Nam bring back weapon with papers typically commands 2-4x value of a more recent import. Being a sniper I would place value on the higher end of that scale.

Thanks, guys - I appreciate the informative replies and your thoughts. Hopefully things will materialize at some point so that I end up being able to place the 91/30 and the M44 carbine in my collection.

Here is the vet (on the left) with his war trophy; me in the middle; my father-in-law on the right. Unlike his 1st cousin (the SF vet who brought home the 91/30 rifle and the M44 carbine), my father-in-law did not serve in Vietnam but he was in the U.S. Army during this time period and trained on the M1 rifle.

Update: 8 months or so ago I made the sniper rifle's owner (the Vietnam SF vet who brought it back) a very strong offer for the rifle and the M44 carbine. He is not ready to sell yet, so I left the offer open indefinitely.

The rifle, M44 carbine, bring-back paperwork for both firearms, and his other war relics are all at his home in South Georgia, within about 5 miles of the Atlantic Ocean. This area appears to be directly in the path of Hurricane Matthew and, particularly, in the anticipated storm surge area. The vet's home (and all surrounding coastal areas) are very low in elevation.

Let's keep our fingers crossed first and foremost for the veteran and his family, as well as for these historical items, hoping that all will pass through the storm in good shape.

I have a Vietnam bringback 91/30 sniper as well that sadly has no capture docs. The one pictured with papers to a SF veteran would command a healthy premium. Especially if you can document the date of capture etc. A significant piece of history.
