K98 Serial number

This K98 made by 42 ( Mauser ) in 1940 has the serial number 6861
the highest known number in RD.Law book is 5498
Is the number on this K98 correct.

the serial is actually 6861gg.

^ this. They were made in batches, this one is batch gg. They started with no letter, then "a" and so on.

To say it another way, the NUMBERS mean almost nothing in terms of production quantity, but the letters underneath or sometimes to the right of the number tell the real story.

Most all German weapons were numbered in blocks of 10,000 and in some cases up to 100,000 with each block designated by a letter or letters.

sometimes there was a "no" letter block before they started with "a", the only unique identifier on a German military weapon is the full number with the letter (if any) and the maker and year and of course model.
