    Help With SS DIENSTGLAS AJACK SCOPE

    Hello All
    I am researching a scope that was given to me by my wife's Uncle he served in the 97th combat engineers division he was in Germany in the Spring of 1945 he brought back several items this particular scope is one of the 2 items i am currently researching so any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Under the one dial that is on the scope it is marked AJACK 38518 and on opposite side it is marked with the SS and Dientsglas also on the tube,case and mount it is marked 9150, i am guessing that is a serial number. also on Mount it is marked HZW .if anyone can help me with this item i would be very grateful.
    I would like to find , if it is possible how many of these were made , since it has a serial number , i was hoping there may be record of how many were made or if there are any records as to what serial number scope was issued to which sniper. any and all info would be most helpful. i added a few pics too help if you need any mmore information or pictures please let me know

    Hi Dan,

    I think you have posted this in the wrong section. Would be glad to move it to the firearms section.

    As I have some knowledge about German sniper rifles, I can help you with this. What you have is completely correct, original and very rare. It is the short side rail scope assembly for a Waffen SS short side rail sniper rifle. The serial number of 9150 would match the rifle it was setup for. Even the scope case matches, tough to find like this. The rifle would have been a WWI vintage surplus Gewehr 98, which was reworked to the specs of a K98k. The SS used these to build sniper rifles, and equip their formations, in a time when procurement of rifles was tough for the SS. The pre-war and early war years. Most, during this time, were going to the Heer, and the Waffen SS decided to equip themselves with reworked Gewehr 98s. The scope mount, marked HWZ, is for Hermann Weihrauch Waffenfabrik, Zella-Mehlis. Ajack is known to have made some of the best sniper optics for German forces, and many think they have the brightest optics.

            Willi is correct. It is worth a small fortune as well. It's a shame the rifle didn't come with it but this is such a rare item it almost doesn't matter.

              One correction. It is assumed by many that only Gew.98 rifles were reworked and Dhd marked for use by the SS. Although this assumption is mostly accurate prewar, this is not accurate once the war begins. For example, standard K98k's were reworked as necessary and DHd marked through 1941. This rework could also result in conversion to SS-SSR configuration. Therefore, SS-SSR's can be based on either reworked Gew98's or reworked K98k's through 1941. As reworks, individual serial numbers and ranges have no relevance.

              This appears to be an outstanding example of an SS-SSR optics set with matching leather case. This is a very valuable rig. I collect SS marked standard rifles, sniper variations and optics and am working on a reference on this subject. I am curious about what if any markings exist on the scope case/strap. Does the interior of the scope case have a pouch with a tool in it? I would be very interested in talking to you off the forum on this rig (sszza2@aol.com).
