My K98 Mauser-Werke KG, Oberndorf on the Neckar

thought you guys would like to see this.

All S/N's match. Just has the duffel cut. It is in perfect working condition. Grandfather brought it back as part of his booty. Sadly though he sold his Luger and P38 (still have the holster for the P38) back in the 60's for a song. The Butt plate was made by H.W. Schmidt, Doebeln in Sachsen and does not carry a S/N.

Do you have the rest of the "duffle cut" portion of the rifle? If so, I would be strongly inclined to put it all back together.

I wish. I asked my Grandfather about it before he passed but he didn't know what I was talking about. It is lost to history.

Too bad . . . that stinks! Really nice proofs/markings on the stock.

I would find a donor stock for the duffle cut piece and get a front & rear Armorers Bands , these are not impossible to find , they are tough but not impossible . If Your interested email me , know a few collectors who may have the bands you need , these
a parts are pricey but IMHO it would be worth the cost to fix your Grandfathers Vet Bring Back K98 . It is a great looking Rifle and doing this would make even better . Best Regards .

You're going to need a bayonet lug, unlaminated handguard, bandspring and perhaps a front sight as well.....Bodes

Since the stock has a matching 9369 S/N to the rest of the gun, (and I found the Butt Plate S/N (9369), would a collector prefer to have the actual matching stock or a gun that has been re-built to include the bayonet lug etc.?

I have thought about looking into this, but having everything original to me has been my intent thus far. I do have a bayonet that I could attach (a Czech model, nothing special) which would be cool.

The gunsmith that gave gave it a once over a few years back said that he would love to have the action, so I am assuming that he would love to restock it....

Will mull it over. Not really a priority right now.

And the front site has the number 69 on it, like a couple other small parts on the gun....

A collector would indeed, but since you said the original is gone there's the next best option......A military collector would like it in it's original configuration (which is what single claw was talking about) and that would involve donor parts.....Your gunsmith is likely thinking the same thing or wants to the convert the action into a hunting rifle.....The unfortunate fate of quite a number of military firearms after the war....Bodes

IMHO , if you are thinking about selling it I would offer it to a collector who is willing to restore it apposed to selling it to the GunSmith that looked it over . I believe there would be a number of guys who would like to buy it and restore it . I did not mention the other parts that Bodes mentioned as those parts are fairly easy to get in UnNumbered cond. , the bands though , those are a tougher task . Still it would be worth the effort to restore it as apposed to it being destroyed by Sporterizing it again just MO . Best Regards .

Thank you for the comments and input guys! I appreciate the interest and whatever happens, this gun will be preserved. Will take all ideas into account.
