    Luger Safety Lever Installation Problem

    I am trying to install a Luger safety lever that I was able to find in order to match all the other numbers on my pistol and cannot get it to work properly. When I install the retaining pin it pushes the lever out a little so the ball on the underside of the lever will stick out away from the frame a little and not seat in the top (Fire) detent on the frame. Not sure if the retaining pins had different sizes or if my lever is for a DWM pistol or not. Seems like the pin is rubbing on the cut out groove of the lever and needs a little smoothing/filing. I don't think the lever is damaged.

    Has anyone encountered this problem before and how can I fix it other than taking it to a gunsmith?

    Hey Glen , Like I said I have never had this issue but to clarify the pistol is DWM , pin is Mauser but the lever is unknown maker . Is the lever strawed or blue ? Any markings other than the serial number ? I would think it is the lever as the pin is just that - a pin . Now the placement of the groove in the lever is a different story . That's about as far as I can take this and good luck . Dave

      Hey Dave,

      The lever has either a Gothic looking M or W on the opposite side of the SN. Finish appears to be a worn blue, not straw, and has a patina that matches the rest of the pistol. I compared the groove to another lever (unknown maker) and it appears the pin does not sit as deep in the lever that I am having problems with. It leads me to believe I need to do a little careful filing to make the pin sit properly when it is pushed to the Fire position. I have read where handfitting was required on various Luger parts and possibly this is one of them. Lucky me!

        All,

        I finally was able to solve this problem, I carefully bent the end where your thumb rests on the lever and now the lever engages the detent in the FIre position like it is supposed to. It was a little time consuming with barely hitting the lever and then trying it on the pistol, but I am happy with the results. A learning process for sure!

          Good news and congrats . Of all the makers of Lugers Krieghoff did the best job as far as interchangeable parts . But then that was the reason they made them - Heinrich wanted Luftwaffe machine gun contracts and the batch of lugers was to show their quality of manufacturing . I actually did the pile of parts and reassemble all scrambled with an early S date , 36 date , 1936 date , 1937 date , 1940 date and 1944 date . Yes indeed they all functioned all scrambled up . Try that with 6 of anyone elses and see what happens . Especially concerning trigger function and fit of the sideplate . Enough rambling and enjoy . Dave

            I knew Lugers required some hand fitting and were more expensive and difficult to make, however I did not know about the interchangeability issues. Crazy! Just makes one wonder how the parts got mixed up on the weapons we see today if there were problems making them fit so long ago.

            It was a learning experience!
