    MG42 Twin barrel case

    Fantasy or fact??

    #2
All MG42 twin barrel carriers I have seen were not originally made for MG42 barrels. They look like MG34 barrel carriers that have been shortened and reshaped to a squerish "mouth" and original steel covers were changed for wooden covers. I would say they were some kind of Yugo post war remake, not MG42 but M53.

Thanks Carles, been looking into them and I agree with you that they do seem to be a postwar reworked MG34 container. But without actually ever handling one I can not say for sure.

A friend asked me about them and I must admit to having never ever seen one and yet he thought they were a real wartime piece!

        Hello,
carles the description is very good .
All that we see on the market are Yugoslav .

But I have an original picture or you just see a double-barreled Case and soldiers possess the MG42 . ( 1. Panzer div in Grèce may-october 1943)

        So why not.

Well, that's is the question...Why not? In that pic you can see the bottom end of a double barrel carrier but not the top, so you can't say if it is a genuine MG42 or if an MG34 one, or even if field-reworked . Till now all those I have seen were a sort of Yugo postwar reworked ones, but never seen an original. So, I don't say they might not exist but (as Saint Thomas) not till I see one that convinces me... Here are a couple of pics of , I presume, a german MG34 reworked one. The "mouth" has been reshaped, the strap is non german, and it has possibly been shortened. It has been repainted dunkelgelb to decieve, as they usually show painted in Yugo apple green.

If you compare an MG34 to this one, you can see the reworked has 5.5 sections while the MG34 has 6.

The original cover is made of pressed steel sheet with a bakelite piece and a thick felt cushion in between, while the reworked is just a plain piece of wood, quite un-german way of makin things

If you magnify that pic a bit, you can see the last two sections of the barrel carrier look the same length so, either it is for MG34 barrels adapted to carrying MG42 barrels, or it is a genuine MG42 barrel carrier, but certainly not the Yugo style rework.

This example is clearly a reworked 34 carrier, the squared off end section is very crudely done.

Came across this today, certainly postwar modified case for the MG53.

It is curious they made so many double barrel carriers for MG34 but we can't find any original one for MG42, when MG42s needed more barrel changing than the 34... Keep on looking for them and we might find one, at least.
