    CYQ P-38 Questions

    Greetings All,

I have a CYQ P-38. I would like to know if anyone knows these manufacture codes.

The slide and frame are marked with an eagle and 88 under it.
One mag has jvd on one side and P38 with a U (under the P38) on the other side.
The second mag has P.38v on one side and WaA135 on the back (at the top) of the mag.
The holster does not match the pistol. On the back it is marked CXB with a 4 under the C (located between the loops).
On the back toward the butt it is stamped P38

On the inside flap in very, very heavy pencil is written this in fancy script:
    Gefa. A. Lander
    P38/2612 J

The holster is a black, peeble type. It appears to be pigskin and not cow hide leather.

    Thanks,
    Christopher

    p38 Help

    Hello,
I will try to answer your questions to the best of my ability.

Your P38 was made in Berlin right at the end of the War. CYQ means that it was made at Metallwarenfabrik Spreewerk, Berlin-Spandau. The 88 is the waffenampt for that factory.

Your first mag was made by Erste Nordboehmische Metallwarenfabrik, Adolf Roessler, Niedereinsiedel, Sudetenland (Czech republic) and the second mag was made by Mauser Werke A.G., Oberndorf-am-Neckar.

Why do you say thart your pistol does not match your holster because it sounds alright to me. If you mean that the 3 letter code does not match, that is not true. All arms companies had different codes for security reasons so a pistol manufacturing company and a holster company would be different.

Sounds like you have yourself a really nice late war rig.

    Hope this has helped you.

      Thanks Cam,

I really appriciate the help. I meant on the holster that it didn't have a serial number that "matched" the pistol. I suppoae that is more rare to WWII pistols. I have seen WWI Lugers that have an "all matching" rig.

      Thanks again,
      Christopher

        Hi Christopher,
To the best of my knowledge no WWII holster was ever stamped with the serial number of the pistol that ended up in it. They were often times made at opposite ends of the country.

          Gary,
Never say never! Many WWII German Police holsters will have the serial number of the pistol that was issued with them!

As for standard P38 holsters, no, they were not issued with numbered holster.
However, what I think Christopher is referring to is the numbers that are written inside the holster!

          Christopher,
Your P38 was made by Spreewerk. Spreewerk had its' headquarters at Berlin/Spandau, but actual production of the P38 was done at its' factory in the Czech Republic, at Spreewerk, Werk Grottau.
The "eagle/88" is the proper acceptance stamp used at Spreewerk, Werk Grottau.

The "jvd" magazine is a late mag made by Erste Nordbohmische Metallwarenfabrik, which is also located in the Czech Republic. The "U" on this mag stands for "ungehartet" or "unhardened" which indicates that the magazinie lip is not hardened, this was started in late October 1944.

Your second mag is a later Mauser produciton. The "eagle/WaA135" is the later Mauser acceptance proof. This type of mag was used on Mauser made P38s from late 1944 until the end of produciton.

Holster was made in 1944, but I'll have to look up the maker code as I don't recal what "cxb" code is for?

          Matt
