There appears to have been some tinkering on the byf. The recoil bolt is reversed, and I doubt those band screws are orig... just imo. An "a" block was assembled in Feb. '45

Bob,
I compared the screws to all of my other example's with screws holding the the bands on, I will agree that they are slightly higher in profile but I'm not so quick to Poo poo them considering the time frame they would have been used. Looking at the condition of the stock I wonder if this rifle wasn't made much closer to the end of the war even if the receiver was made earlier, what flaw might this receiver had and maybe rejected then used later. I'm not a K98k expert but I do know the P.35 Radom pistol and have some very late war examples that don't jive with the books.
I just used a jewelers loop and see the correct numbers on the recoil bolt, the numbers have been struck poorly but I don’t see and signs of another number... they almost look like the 9 bounced. I have no problems with this rifle and it will stay as it is.Last edited by R_Hessian; 03-16-2015, 10:29 PM.

Bob,
That will be a quick fix with the correct tool, while correct to the rifle why someone would disassemble the recoil bolt is a bit odd even at extreme cleaning. All said I will reverse that as it should be. Thank you for pointing this out.
