Question about Mauser auction rifle with a scope

I picked up this rifle a week ago, from a guy that got it from a vets estate. I cannot find any maker marks on it so any help would be appreciated. I always wanted one of these German hunting rifles. By the proof marks it is from 1939-1945. But I am not sure about the proof mark under the barrel. And want to make sure is it normal 8mm Mauser?
    Thank you
    Regards RD

Well from what little I can see it appears you have a Mauser sporter built on a commercially proofed 98 action(Eagle over N) from the Nazi era. Perhaps someone else can provide you with more information from the pictures. If the information on the bottom is correct it should be for the normal 8MM chambering. If there is any doubt regarding the chambering I'd sugggest you get a chamber cast done.

I agree, if those stamps are correct it is a regular 7,92x57, so regular 8mm.

Great looking rifle! I love these German hunting guns too, they were made for people with money and land (only people that could hunt in Germany at that time) so they are really well made and often very fancy! I agree with others here on other markings, but I can add that the "344" stands for 3rd month of 1944 production date. That's a very late piece.. not a lot of hunting guns being produced that far into the war! Guy must have had some pull to get one at that time! Best, Kevin.
