1900 Danzig Gew 98 (deac UK)

Just bought privately for £500.00. Picture not up to much from seller but had to take a punt before somebody beat me to it! It's certainly a few hundred cheaper than any dealer sites and I've never seen one this early! Hopefully it will be a cracker!

It was described as being GC/VGC with no pitting. Obv cleaning rod is absent and rear sling swivel. It had been converted in calibre as well.

    Will update when it arrives

New pics: It is in excellent condition with lovely woodwork, plenty of finish and smooth, tight action.

For those of us tracking these, can you provide the serial number (with suffix letter, if any) on the receiver?
Is there an S on the top of the barrel behind the rear sight but in front of the receiver?
Can you make out the unit stamp (if any) on the disc in the butt?
        Many thanks!

          Of course...

The serial no. is 102049 (no prefix letter)
The S is present (I believe this signifies recalibration)
There is a similar sized H on the butt plate

I cannot really find much of interest marking wise on either the wood or the metal apart from what appear to be two-digit 'part numbers' stamped onto various fittings. The butt disc is blank.

I do not know a lot about these apart from the scant info on the web, if you can point me toward a website I would appreciate it.

The serial number would be on the leftside of the receiver and barrel, it would be 1 (one) to 4 digits long (1-9999) and it probably will have a suffix a-e, possibly later, but it should have no prefix. What matters is the acceptance pattern and how the metal and stock are marked, this will tell you, at least to a degree, the history of the rifle, - it looks like a fireproof was added, so it probably saw some work, as almost all rifles this early do.

These pictures tell us very little about the rifle unfortunately, but for a brief outline of Gewehr98's , you can visit this website http://www.gewehr98.com/

                    7 (last one).

These are the most significant markings that I can see. The 4-digit number (2670) on the butt plate matched the 4-digit number (2670) burnt into the underside of the butt in pic 7.

Thanks for taking the time to post some pictures, the rifle has been re-serialed, this is not the original serial unfortunately, though the acceptance stamps are original. Originally the rifle would not have had a fireproof on the receiver, but most subsequently received one, - back then only the barrel and bolt had a FP, but changed a few years later. Finding an early G98 without a FP is usually a good sign it is still factory original, or close to it.

Unless the barrel has a serial number, there is no way to know where this fell in 1900/Danzig production, but considering the right acceptance pattern, it was probably one of the earlier blocks. The parts look like a good mix, but most seem to be proper for the variation. The stock is the right type, it could even be a Danzig made stock with what the acceptance looks like, - unfortunately, no way to tell unless the barrel is original... when rifles left the factory, only the receiver, barrel and bolt have the full serial number, so unless the barrel is original (the serial on it and the markings underneath would give a good idea of whether its Danzig and when), no way to know if anything is factory original.
