    MG42 AA spider sight

    Hello everyone,

I'm looking to get some further opinions on this MG42 AA spider sight. I know these are very rare to find, as there are so many fakes and reproductions around for sale!

I believe this one is an original example, but I am hoping to confirm that. It is much more well made than the repros that I've seen and handled before, it also has some features I know the repros lack (well the ones I've seen anyway...) and it looks correct compared to pictures of known originals that I've looked at.

Also appears to be marked with waffenamt 4 stamp, which I think I've seen before on original MG34 AA spider sights...?

    Thanks for looking
    Patrick

        MG42 AA spider sight

        Hi,
Sorry, but I think it's wrong.
The earlier sights do not have that triangular plate at the bottom where the top piece fits the stem - see my sight in the first picture, I've always believed this sight to be right but even if somebody thinks it's wrong, it does at least show you the correct shape.
That triangular plate is found on the later pattern with the pressed steel upper but where the sides taper in they angle in to meet the stem exactly without those flats at the bottom - see the second pic of a very rare type of the pressed-steel sight.
        Hope this helps,
        Grossfuss

          MG42 AA spider sight

          Hello again,
To prove the point, here's a pressed-steel sight I bought at Beltring from a well-known purveyor of gun parts and accessories - see the difference in that triangular plate.
I was so pleased with it when I bought it, but later investigations on the French MG42 forum (I've lost the link but another member will undoubtedly be able to provide it) shattered my illusions - it's another product from the Far East, along with Lafette bolt boxes etc. etc.
Knowledge is useful - take care!
          Regards,
          Grossfuss

              1) I must confess I haven't seen many MG42 AA sights but the first OP's one looked good to me. Could be mistaken, though. Patrick, can I see some shots from the side, flat, and from under junction of the rod to the ring?

              2) Now, for sure the #1 posted by Grossfuss is not good. (see pic)

              3) I had one exactly the same as #2 and #3 posted by Grossfuss many years ago. I got in Poland about 30 years ago and I've always thought it was original, as by then there were no fakes to be seen, but could always be post war production...

Hello everyone, thank you for the replies! Yes certainly Carles, I will get some more pictures taken tomorrow, and this time better ones too! I do still believe this is an original sight, unless the ones I was comparing to have also been the exact same fakes as you mention Grossfuss... but I will try and post those pictures as well for comparison, and hopefully we can confirm either way, 100% original or postwar fake. Thanks again

Perfect (and I mean perfect) copies of these sights were made in Birmingham UK about 10-15 years ago, even down to the waffenamt stamps. They were only made in small numbers by one man who has since passed away.

I would say his work was just a tiny bit better then wartime production peices. proceed with caution.

OMG, not again the Birmingham clan...If they are even better than original...how can we distinguish good from bad?

Be very cautious of mint looking examples, and go over them with a very fine eye. If they look too good to be true, they probably are. Like I said above the Birmingham copy ones are spot on, just maybe made a little too good. The chap you produced these back in the day was a master craftsman, he even made the waffenamt stamps himself.

Here is one that I used to compare:

Well, I like the making but, as mentioned, I'm more an MG34 guy than MG42. Anyhow, not everything in that lot is good. The barrel mitten is not good...or/and fake stamped.
