    Fg42

This may be a bit of a futile quest, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of an FG42 for sale- my Dad's been a big collector for years, but the FG42 is the only infantry weapon he hasn't been able to find, so I thought I'd see what I could find. If any of you guys has an idea of where to look or knows of someone to whom I should speak, please let me know.

    Thanks

Are you looking for a active one, or just a dummy gun?

Dummy ones, can be found in this weeks "Shotgun News". They sell for about $900 I think.

A active transferable FG42 will be extremely difficult to find. If you do find one, it will cost you anywhere between $30,000-$60,000 depending on condition! Magazines for these alone sell for up to $1,000!
So I hope you have some $ to spend. They are awesome though! Only seen one real one (in my hands!) in my life! ( I also saw a few at the army ordance mueseum, and the FBI building has a couple as well.)

Hi Matt, I have only played with one FG42 in my life. This was a second pattern gun and was owned by the late Dougie Preece here in the UK. It had a £12,000 price tag! I was kind of disappointed, as it did not handle as well as my MP44.
I do not know if this is true, but I have been told that Malcolm Fisher of "Regimentals" in the UK has a live one. He certainly had one for sale in his catalog many years ago.
      Cheers, Ade.

I have been collecting WWII small arms for the last 25 years and have never seen an FG42 for sale. Since very few were ever made (some say less than 35,000) , most were snatched up by the victorious armies after the war and placed in their own armories or museums. Only a very few ever found their way into the hands of private collectors. Those that do own them know that they have a highly desirable and expensive weapon.

If you are looking to fill a hole in your collection I would suggest you find one of the Japanese repros made a few years back by Shoei. These aren't cheap either. First model FG42 repros go for $1500+ and the newer second models are in the $1200-$1500 range. They disassemble just like the real ones, weigh the same and look frighteningly close to the real McCoy.

This tread is also on the German paratroopers site where I posted photos; maybe the two should be joint together ?

            Thanks

Thanks, guys, for the replies- I really appreciate your help. I had NO idea the FG42 was so rare and valuable, so I guess the dream of owning one will remain just that. Perhaps one day we'll get lucky and find a 'lost' one, but I'm not going to hold my breath (ha). Oh well.

              Matt L,

If you find a lost one, that would be worse! I don't know what the laws in Canada are, but here in the US, all machine guns must be registered. If you find a "lost" one, it probably won't be registered, and therfore would be considered possesion of an illegal class 3 firearms which is a federal offence, and you will go to jail!

                Total beeing produced

Total production numbers are differing depending on the source; some state that no more than 7,000 FG 42 of all variants were produced, while others say 5,000 or only a maximum of 1,500. The only definitive production number is that of the FG 42 produced late in the war for the army: 4,397.

I agree with 7000 being the total production of both models of the FG42.
