M1 Carbine prices...

Gentlemen,

I have a question about prices on ww2 M1 Carbines. I don't mess with these too much but am curious as to the "real" value of these. I was offered a M1 Carbine from Inland with all matching early flip site, flat topped bolt, blued finish. The hand guard is a Louisville slugger w/ 2 rivits instead of 4. I know its hard to say without any pics but lets say its in really nice condition (knowing the source I'm sure its pretty sweet). What do they go for? I don't know if Inland is a desirable maker on these or not. I don't have an issue paying market value but don't want to over pay either. My brother is the one who is interested in it more than I am but I hate to let a sweet rifle get away incase he passes. Looking forward to hearing some thoughts. Matt

Well shoot, if it's non-reworked or a few early replacement parts, possibly around 1500 to 2000? If with say the post-war bayonet lug, probably half that, if reworked, restocked, etc. Inland is one of the most common manufacturers, but I still love them and looking for one! Saw a reworked one at a shop for $750, and that's a good price, if any indication.

thanks for the info. The asking price is 1250 which doesn't seem to be too far off if its an unmessed with original (knowing the source I'm sure it is). Appreciate the info. Matt

Whether they are desirable or not is in the eye of the beholder. Inlands had one of the highest, if not highest, production numbers. How does the stock look ?

Most desirable: Winchester (IMO)

If you look you can find decent deals. I'd be closer to 1k or less for the inland. Unless it has sling/mags etc.

As an example I was fairly patient on gunbroker and picked up my all original Winchester carbine for around 1k because of bad photos in the listing.

A day before one with a few mixed parts sold for near 2k.

Most desirable makers - that's kind of like blondes vs redheads - it depends want you like !

As previous poster stated for him it was Winchesters. Winchester manufacture has a collection genre all of its own, like Colts for the 1911A1. As far as rarity, out of approximately 6.1 million, 2.6 million were Inland, and 800K were Winchesters. So you have the two most common makers in these two, which contributed more than 50% of all examples made !

I think I prefer the early Rock-Ola just because it was made by a Juke Box company and they had one of the smallest production numbers of all the makers.

Interesting info guys, I can see what your saying about the rarity and its all in what you like.

Louisville made gun stocks and handguards, bat company and all it that makes sense or at least to me.

I guess I meant in general that like Colts are to 1911's, Winchesters are to Carbines.

So yes there will always be personal preference, but as a general rule.

I appreciate it guys, I'm pretty clueless on US stuff. So I got some pics from my buddy. It looks pretty nice and i'll try to get them posted up tomorrow. All parts on it are original except for the sling and the D ring. The stock is original but had some shellac on it and it was removed which made a couple of the stock marks a bit faint.... Im guessing that hurts the value? Matt

For me the most desirable would be Irwin Pederson/Saginaw simply due to rarity.

Yes, a little. Shellac? It isn't a lend lease or otherwise imported gun is it?

What is the d ring?? The barrel band?

Yes, will affect value... Pics will help immensely. If the markings are there at all that's a good thing.

its back in America, I'm only here for a short European tour/assignment. I have no intention of buying any guns in Europe. I left all my toys back in the states before I left. I wouldn't wast money on a deactivated one because the laws here are not the same as the states so again, just not worth buying any of that stuff here. Matt
