Can anyone help to ID this unusual square piece attached to the base of the front sight hood on this MP40 barrel? I've asked several other gun collectors and one said it's the mount for a blank attachment used for training purposes and the other said it's the mount for the muzzle cover used on early manufactured MP40s dated 1940.
It would be great to learn exactly what it was used for and if there was an attached connected to this piece can you show us a photo of what the device looks like. Thanks.
