I could wax on here with an opinion, but it's just that of a layman and the internet has too many unqualified opinions floating around anyway - There are a couple of guys who specialize in bringing these back from dewat state - if it has paperwork -
Up here in Canada, an aircraft MG08, complete and demilled can go for as much as 8k. Having said that, that price is from a seller who regularly overprices his stuff by 30-50%. It sells, but it takes him a year or two to find the right clown. So I would say 5k is probably what it is worth.
The one the OP is describing is not demilled and it is not in Canada -
The Canadian price for a demilled example bears almost no reflection on the one he is describing.
Demilled and dewat (registered) are two very different legal descriptions in the US.
1. A demilled - display - inert gun - dummy (usually with a reproduction inert side plate) - $5-8K depending on accessories.
(An "equivalent" although not exactly the same example in Canada and the UK would be termed deactivated.)
The firearm the OP is describing is an NFA registered dewat.
As I said - there is enough worthless, uneducated and potentially dangerous legal, chatter on MG's and their worth, lore, etc., - contact Bob Naess and do yourself a favor. He can also help with the reactivation from dewat status.
This site/forum is awesome and I love it for WW2 militaria, but some of the information regarding US MG law, values and general legal information that is shared by adults here who should know better, and are clearly extremely knowledgable about the technical/factory/production data associated with German weapons and accessories is just plain awful -
This LMG 08/15 appeared on the U.S. market (sturmgewehr.com) about 3 years ago with an asking price of $8,000; it sold for $6,000. The interrupter mechanism (shown in photo) was not present at the time of purchase nor was the front sight. The front sight show is a reproduction; the interrupter is an original that came off a parts kit sourced on GunBroker.
Except for the fusse cover, the gun is all matching including the lock mechanism (made by Mercedes) and the barrel.
