    A nice little pick up at the gun show today. . .

    Hello!
    Today I was at the local gun show, and I saw a man trying to trade this for a Craig Jorgenson Rifle, but the dealer didn't want to trade. Well I saw the man head for the door. Today I was looking for an M-1 Garand, but most of them there were just too high for me. But being the curious George I am I asked him "How much?". Well he offered to sell it to me for $650. I thought about it, then I bought it. I am very happy to own this rifle. Ever since the first time I saw the M-1 in "Saving Private Ryan" when I was in 5th grade or so, I knew I had to have one. I do have a few questions about this rifle though. Is this WWII manufacture, and did I get a decent deal on it?

      Hi Tyler, you cannot go wrong with an M1 Garand. My first rifle was an M1 when I was aged 18, back in the good old days when we could have live semi autos

      They are so reliable and fun to shoot. I am sure you will really enjoy owning one.

        Surely you must mean matching SA marked parts with proper era finishes..right ?. I ask as US rifles never had the small parts serialed like was the case in europe.

          Jason, I'm not sure Garands fall into a matching #'s thing like lets say a Mauser.....I believe they fall into the category of serial#/barrel date in proper order and all parts made by the same contractor. Add to that proper stock cartouches and finish on the metal.....This one of course is a Springfield Armory.....Winchesters are more desirable 'cuz of the appeal of the maker.....I'd say if you have any decent non-import M1 that is fully functional, you've got a desirable rifle....If they're all original WW2, than you've got a jem.....Bodes

            Oh, I'm sorry. How stupid of me. I was refering to matching parts. Like if the receiver and barrel maker match. Not a peiced together gun.

              As Bodes mentioned, you still have correct draw numbers for parts. The guys who specialize in WWII M1s collect them the same way advanced guys collect K98ks...everything has to be textbook for it to bring the top $$. The difference between a $500 M1 and a $2000 one.

                Very nice Tyler. Made right at the end of production just prior to the M14 being adopted and produced. In that condition and with that late a production date, I'd consider it a keeper. What it the barrel maker and date? Pull the operating rod back to see this. Peek into the slot between the stock and the handguard.

                  I pulled the rod back, and this is what I found. . . .


                  Am I correct to say this was made in 1955 or is the "55" just a part of some code?

                      Tyler, you did fine, especially if there is no import mark on the barrel. I would not worry about getting a 100% correct garand, as Even $2000.00 almost always buys you a put together refinished gun. There are very,very few untouched guns from WW2, as almost all have been arsenal redone many times. This is a collecting field(like everything I guess) where its best to study,study,study and then buy if you are after a truly original untouched gun.respectfully,

                        Looks good to me. That barrel matches the serial number range going by the dates provided by Jason S. It's very crisp and clean. Although not a WWII piece, it's a nice representative M1. I once got an M1 from CMP and it looked like it spent most of its life under the Atlantic (after someone switched every freakin' part they could on it). It went bye-bye. I can't believe they sent that trash out. A buddy of mine got a minty, unissued International Harvester just before I got mine. Luck of the draw. Oh well.
