Any long distance precision shooters?

Hi,
Yes I found out that a level is a "must have" for long range .....
The level behind the pistol grip was the first I put on.
But now I made a version for the scope. It is better because
with your second eye you always have the level under control while shooting.

Otto, which Kahles and Leupold? I have a Leupold M4 4.5-14x50 that I now put on a 5.56. When compared to a S&B the difference is striking. Yes, I think the S&B is superb. I have used it out to 750 yards at night and in bad weather. I like the features and the optics. I have been eyeing one of the new Kahles.Willi

I have the Leupold Mk 4 16x , great scope with the very fine crosshair
rectile. I think this is one of the best scopes for long range ....
I worked about 20 years for Kahles. I made the main tubes for their
scopes with my CNC machine tools. So I had the chance to look behind
the scenes for a long time . Great company with a long tradition in building
high end optical systems (1898 - )
I use a 4-18x and a 6-24x Kahles on some of my gun´s , and I think about
buying the new 10-50x for my next gun I will build.
I think I will go for a 6mm Norma BR with a NC-Rado single shot System, with
my "benchrest" style stock.

Ah now that now makes sense Otto. No wonder you are so skilled. I should have recognized the Leupold M4 turret. I am thinking about the Kahles K series......6-24x56i. Which reticle do you prefer? I use a P4F on my S&B and like that one, but Kahles does not offer the same one. Since the S&B has the US military contract I went for it. I do know not all favor it over other options. But I have yet to see one of the newer Kahles.
I guess I fit into the realm of a 'practical' shooter. I like steel targets and challenging courses of fire. Here is a view from an advanced school I attended out in Pennsylvania at a 1050-yard range I also belong to. That area, as well as some neighboring states, have some great sniper matches.Last edited by Willi Z.; 12-14-2014, 02:58 PM.Willi

Willi, seems to be a nice range you are showing here.
In Austria it is not so easy to get access to really "Long range" shooting range´s.
Most of them are military used, and so not public .
I have the chance one or two times a year to go on a 1000 + m range,
normaly I am on a 100/200 range near Salzburg where I live.
I have the mildot rectile on my Kahles scopes, quite nice but I really like
the very fine crosshair in the Leupold MK4, really just great.
I think Kahles does not have such a fine rectile.
3 shots 275 m
Bullet is a 150 grs brass solid with 47 grs Bofors RP 3 in a Lapua Shell just neck
sized.

Hi Otto,
That is an amazing group! I assume each square is 1cm. I guess you are using CNC equipment to make those bullets. Very interesting. I have some Lapua brass tucked away. How many loadings do you get from each casing? 10-12? Neck sizing is indeed the best way to go for precision rifle. What type of die do you use?
I do see benchrest shooters using a Leupold reticle. I am pleased with the P4fine reticle with the S&B.
I have only been to Salzburg once and really liked it!
A view of the range from a steel target at 1040 yards. And an aerial view of the range taken by a friend.Willi

Hi,
When I started reloading I used RCBS dies.
Cheap and good quality.
Then I used Wilson when I started neck sizing.
For my .308 and the .300 Win Mag I made my own dies in the mean time.
I just use Lapua brass, they are worth their Money. I think it is no Problem
to get 20+ loads with this lapua brass. I also do a heat treatment after
5 loads .
The bullets are done on a swiss cut machine tool:

Otto, you have an amazing setup!!! My father would have been envious. After he came over to the US he became a tool and die maker for AT&T - Bell Labs. He made parts for satellites, etc. On the side he would made scope mounts, muzzle brakes, replacement parts for German WWII rifles, etc.
Do your dies have bushings to accommodate very casing manufacturers? Or do you have a neck size die for various casings?
I use some Wilson accessories: case trimmer, etc. I also used RCBS dies for rifle, but now I have switched to Redding.

I had an uncle who was a POW in virgina, after he was captured in Italy . He had to work on a farm there in 1944/45. After he returned to Austria he studied tecnical engineer in vienna.
He went back to the US in 1956, after he finished.
He also worked till he retired for AT&T. Maybe your father knew my uncle.
My sizer die uses the Redding bushings, but the important part is the seating die.
It also has a kind of bushing, to get very "concentric" ammunition .

Otto
