This is a lesson that reinforces the old adage study, study, study. I stopped by The Castro Valley Gunshop before I moved and lo and behold this was sitting in the rack for $165.00. Needless to say I bought it on the spot!

Gary,
Nice find. All metal parts match on this? Then that is definately a steal at that price!
I would definately change the stock! Even though the stock still won't match, at least get rid of that ugly cut laminated stock! This is an early K98, and needs a nice solid walnut stock, with Mauser proofs, and with flat butt plate!

Matt, not so fast on changing that stock. The walnut stocks were subject to warpage, and that laminated stock could have well been put on during the war as evidenced by the duffel bag cut. Just my opinion.
respectfully,
jeff
p.s. great rifle, unbelievable priceLooking for a 30 '06 Chauchat magazine.

Hey Matt,
I don't touch them when they are like this. It is the original stock on the rifle as captured, to me that has more historical significance than a rifle coming new out of the factory. And yes the metal is all matching.

I disagree totally with the stock theory on this one guys! I've got a K43 in my collection, that has a duffle cut stock. However, it is the matching stock!!!!!!!
This is not the correct stock for a "G" date rifle!
If the stock is serial numbered, and doesn't match, then it's not a wartime replacement stock either! If it were, it would not be numbered, or it would have been re-numbered by the depot that did the repair/replacement.
This rifle came form a gun shop. The stock was added to this gun post war!
So you guys are saying if I have a K98, with a MM stock in my collection, that I should go ahead and "duffle cut" the stock, so that it looks like a "correct vet bring back"?
If everyone agreed with that, then every single MM K98 would be considered a "correct vet bring back!"
You can certainly do what you want with it Gary, but your reasoning on this one is incorrect.
Matt
PS- also, this stock is just plain ugly. Putting that stock with this rifle is like putting a vinyl interior in a brand new Porsche! It just isn't right!
If for no other reason, change it to make it look better!

Matt, I totally agree that there is no way this stock was placed on this rifle during the war w/o either replacement #'s in line with the metal, or nil numbers whatsover...And there's no way certain it's history when purchased from a gun shop...And I too have a G43 with duffle cut stock that was original to the piece and utterly butchered....Even though it came from the factory that way, the cut part of the stock was always the first thing that caught my eye....I have since replaced it with another original period stock...it has #'s on the stock which do not match the metal, but looks correct...As for Gary, hey do what you want....You're the one that has to be happy in the end....Although an original early stock w/sheet metal buttplate would be bitchin'..... Bodes
