    Possible Commercial Magazine

    I checked the super website at http://p38guns.com for information on the grips and this magazine. A careful inspection with a lope of the spine on the magazine reflected no acceptance stamp. According to the information on the P-38 site above, this magazine may be have been manufactured for the commercial market.

      Hi Michael,

      The grips on your gun are correct for a war time Mauser produced P.38 that was made from about mid 1944 to April of 1945.

      The most correct grips for your Walther made in the Spring of 1944 would be reddish brown bakelite grips with the number 1528 in the lower circle of the right grip and 1529 in the lower circle of the left. Dark brown bakelite grips could be considered correct also but they must have the numbers.

      The mag is either a mid 1943 to the end of war mag made for a Walther HP (Heeres Pistole, commercial) or a mid 1943 to end of war military where they missed stamping the waffenamt. The former is most likely.

        ac44!

        Nice gun, I too have a ac 44 walther. I think mine has been refinished but all the numbers match, even the handles. Picked mine up at a show. I love it. Seems like it was made too well!!!

            Hi Michael,

            I must have the same problem. My gun is identical. Mine came from a vet, I wonder if they put these Mauser grips on for looks?

                I can't really tell from the pictures. Remove the grips to see what is on the inside. The Mauser grips we were talking about are made of a rather soft plastic while the earlier Mauser grips and Walther grips are bakelite and much harder. The bakelite grips can be very dark and appear almost black like the Mauser grips.

                  Very nice example!! Like Leon said, take a look at the inside of the grips. Yours should show 2 low circles inside the left grip, and a mold sprue inside the middle of the right grip. The set that I show in this post is the Mauser made plastic ones. They are not marked but have the characteristics exactly that are listed on a number of websites including the excellent site at www.p38guns.com. I can only speculate on mine. I have no information except "as is." The most likely scenario is that my grips are replacements for damage to the original ones.

                      I took the grips off and they are identical to yours. This gun is mint, I cannot tell if it has ever been fired. Someone must have switched the grips at one point.

                        Actually, all of the standard ac44 Walther produced P.38s have the ac44 in a straight line. It is the ac43 straight lines that are not as common (but not rare).

                        The only ac44 markings that are stacked (ac over 44) are on the FN slides. A few of these were assembled by Walther (fewer than 10 reported) but most were assembled by Mauser and Spreewerk in 1945.
