    1917 DWM Artillery Luger

I just got this today. It's a numbers matching artillery luger made by DWM in 1917. I'm not sure if the barrel has been reblued (looks that way by the pic) but there is some pitting and such on it so I'm going to take some pictures in natural light tomorrow. But for right now, here are the two pictures I have of it. It came with a reproduction holster, breakdown tool, magazine holster, and I think a reproduction cleaning rod. It also has one magazine.

The barrel does appear to be reblued. Get a snail drum and stock for it.

There is one snail drum on the eStand that I would love to get. But after dropping a bit more than I would've liked for a reblued barrel , I need to save my pennies for a little bit. When I bought it, I was told that it wasn't reblued (like the other one they had there that wasn't numbers matching) and all original. A stock will be coming soon as well Either way, I have a very nice shooter grade pistol and that's what I wanted. So I guess I can't complain too much.

If you are buying the snail drum with the intention of shooting it, be aware there are a lot of reproduction drums out there of questionable quality, and many of them are not being sold as reproductions. To shoot one you will also need the loader.

The picture provided is not enough for a correct evaluation, at least to me. The best way to check if the barrel is reblued or not is to see if the serial numbers stamped there have halos around them...

and they have the halo's. So I guess my next question is this. I bought it because the person selling it said it was the original finish. They had a reblued one there for $800 less than the one I bought. It wasn't numbers matching, but they are both reblued. What would be a good price to pay for this pistol considering it has been reblued, but is still numbers matching. If I still got a decent deal, I may keep it. I'm a little irked though because I feel like I was mislead and am somewhat upset. It's still a nice pistol but I put down two grand for this gun... should I be upset because I paid too much or should I be ok with it considering what it is and I got a fair price? This is my first Artillery luger and I'm not sure on how I should feel. I'll upload pictures later tonight.

From the pictures posted, serial number 6370g is not reblued.
Finish is original and the gun - if matching - is in collectable condition.

Oh. Thank. God. I was very worried when someone said something about Halo's... I'm glad to know that this is an original finish. Yes it is a numbers matching (I've checked all of them ) rig and I plan on keeping it and shooting it every once in a while. I love my Lugers (I have an 1917/1920 Erfurt and now a DWM 1917 Arty) and want to enjoy them and eventually pass them down to my kids. I just need to break down and buy a good book about Lugers so I can be a little more educated on the subject.
Thanks again for your help guys!

Well, personally I would not risk to shoot it.
I know, the gun is yours and you have the right to do whatever you want - and I respect that - but have in mind that if a single numbered part breaks then your gun will be instantly reduced to a shooter grade gun. I've seen this happening before. Others surely will have a completely different opinion (guns are meant to be shoot, etc.), but I prefer the conservative approach on this subject.

And you can always buy a much cheaper shooter... you know, it's a perfect excuse to add another Lugers to the collection!

In any case, enjoy it! It's a nice LP08.

                          Douglas.

Along the lines of what Douglas posted about shooting your LP.08, on one of the Luger forums a member purchased a new to him Artillery and gave a running account of the fun he was having shooting it. All went fine until the day he reported that the breech block had cracked during a shooting session.

Shooter grade Lugers can be had at shooter grade prices, and this would be a much better alternative for something there is no worry about breaking.

I agree it looks OK from what we can see here . If I was buying this I would want a MUCH CLOSER look at it though . My concern would be a 98-99% untouched 1917 LP08 for $2,000????????? This thing looks almost mint !! You cannot buy a regular 1917 DWM 4" military in honest 98-99% for that . Is it like new inside ? It does have light grips like it should . Do they match ? I am always a skeptic as I am in the same area as one of the best " artists " and his fake 1916 navys are REALLY GOOD !!!!!! They showed up about 20 years ago and fool many to this day . I am not aware of this being done with LP08's but the point is that the ability to get the machining and bluing that close is definitely out there . Heck look at the stuff that has and is going on with Krieghoff"s !!!!!! Not going to blow whistles here but 2 of my past Krieghoffs that had issues and mis-matched mags are now 98-99% and one has THREE MATCHING MAGS !!!!!!!!!!! Musta been " re-issued " with a special holster . I hope my skepticism is un-founded and if so CONGRATS as it does indeed look minty from the pics . Dave
