My Thanks to all who lent their expertise in my "luger dilemma". As I
suspected, it was neither a great bargain nor a terribly overpriced
pistol. I'll see how the money goes and perhaps he'll even lower the price between now and Christmas...
But alas, now I have another firearms question, and again I will ask for
the guidance of the forum members who know 98K rifles. I picked up one recently that is a completely matched bcd 41 with 30's dated sling, sight hood, cleaning rod, etc etc. That's the good part...the negative? (Oh yes,
there's ALWAYS a negative!) And this one has a huge negative. The rifle
appears to have been...gasp...parkerized or some such horror! It has a
pale greenish cast over the metal parts. When I asked the fellow about
when this was done, he didn't know what I was talking about. He told me
his uncle had brought it home from the war and given it to him many years ago, saying it was just as he got it. As a matter of fact, his uncle was still
living so, at my request, he went to inquire about the finish. He then
brought me a handwritten letter, signed by his uncle that stated that he
got the rifle aboard the troopship coming home from Europe. He said that
they were playing poker, and that a fellow owed him $50, so he took the
rifle as "partial payment" for the debt. But the next part of the letter
probably answered my question. He then stated that in 1969 he took the
gun to a gunsmith to have it completely checked out so that he could make
a graduation present of it to his nephew from whom I purchased the rifle.
So undoubtedly the dirty deed was performed by the gunsmith, who, during
that era, probably figured that the flat finish would be far better for
deer hunting than the German blueing on the rifle...yes, a late 60's
"bubba operation"...but my question is this. I have $300 in the rifle, the price the nephew requested. A fellow is inquiring about it, and he's willing to offer $450 for it. Too much, too little, or take the money and run?? Or should I maybe have it reblued to appear as it once did? (Is that even possible?) I appreciate any help on any of this. And I do hope I can return the favor on
something I know a little about down the road.
Thank you all once again as I look forward eager to your responses.
Good collecting and God bless,
William
