Chance to buy Matching K98 Cleaning Rod?

I have an all matching K98, except for the cleaning rod. Now I have the chance to buy one for it that has the numbers on it. He tells me,"The one thing I note about it is that the 9 is a bit more than 1/3 around the rod from the 5. Its not half way around but its not together either. My guess is they struck the first number, the rod bounced and they didn't take the time to rotate it back in proper rotational relationship prior to striking the second number". The rod is selling for $76.95. Do you guys think this is a good deal. My gun came with a rod, that was described to me as a trainer rod. It has no slot to put your cleaning patch, it just has a narrow notch running across the top. Anyway, I thought maybe the way this new rod is stamped maybe it's 59 instead of 95 and asked him about that and he replied "good point I never thought of. I think It never entered my mind because if you read it as 95 then the 9 is about a short 1/4 inch in front of the 5. If you read it a 59 then the 5 is about twice as far in front of the 9. I'm sure its 95 and wish it were a bit closer too, but its the only one I have or know of. In any case it is a nice rod. I also have the same exact type rod that was never marked, no numbers. A lot of people go that way, they are listed for sale by me under "beautifully machined". Same rods, wide variety of patinas available, no numbers. one more thing about the 95, If you gun is all matching 95 then future admirers will read the rod number as 95 too I'm sure." Here are the pics of the cleaning rod. Maybe I should save my money, but this is ALL MATCHING K98 that I picked up for 350.00 that a pawn shop didn't realize what they had!!!!!!!!!

I guess I can't blow up the pictures but the rod without a doubt looks real.

What year was your K98k manufactured, and would it have had a numbered rod originally?

Hello Johnny, My barrel says 1938, this mauser is one of those that has a blank receiver except for the serial number and the waa 359 on the other side. waa 280 all over the gun. I was told this is a gun maybe thrown together later. I was shown that this gun is in a k98 book and is a varient?

Matching K98 BYF by stephen grund is the old thread that shows the discussion about my rifle with all the pics I took back then. People say it is one rare rifle, that's another reason why I was thinking of buying that cleaning rod.

Your "blank" receivered 98 is probably about '41 assembled. With matched wood, likely a longer rod (12.5") which is $50-65. IMO, a "matched" rod would be a nice touch, but doesn't really enhance what you have. If the rod fits the stock, and is priced right, there is no harm in the purchase.... but either way, not a big deal on your rifle, IMO...

The numbers spaced out like that I've seen on two rods I've previously had so not a problem. Could be said to 59 or 95 though.

It took three rods to make a cleaning rod, and is common to find them mis-matched to the rifle as they got swapped around.
