From the source it's doubtful that any modifications have been made but the comment is appreciated! As I mentioned, I'm a WWII firearm rookie... where else would I find a number on the stock? thanks for the input!!!

You would have to take the action out of the stock.....The serial number will be found (if applicable) in the barrel groove and under the hand guard.....The stock has a Mauser WaA (135) acceptance proof which is a very good sign that it is original to the piece.....Bodes

well my advice is not to do that,as its looks like it was never taken apart since war ends.

The rifle looks like it was stored for years in a place with large temperature swings, causing condensation and rust. It won't hurt the rifle to carefully disassemble it to be sure no rust is hidden under the wood.

Sound advise.....Careful disassembly is the key....Take time loosening screws, as not to bunger them up....And careful with the handguard, as these can be delicate and break with minimal amount of pressure if one is not careful....Bodes

I've got a 44 byf "bring back" that is serial 38485k. Almost 1900 rifles earlier than yours, which would make for the 2nd rifle i've seen to be so close in serial number to mine.

Might do some minor disassembly but I'm comfortable this one has been together all it's life and I'm no gunsmith. Will take wehl's advice and anything I do will be with great care! Thanks for all the help with this piece! I have a number of Civil War weapons but this is the only 'modern' firearm I have. Just such an iconic piece of WWII.
