    Unfired German 98k

A local auction house is selling a 98k advertised as mint unfired with paperwork and taken from Hitler's Munich house in1945. Assuming that it is matching numbers, any opinions as to what it might go for? These are the only pics available.

Well it's not mint, you can see from the sight band and barrel bands that's not true. They look like they have much more wear then the rest of the rifle.Need much better pictures also. Unfired? Kind of hard to prove that also.

I can imagine the vet explaining the story when he got home, from Hitler's house!!!

That sounds laughable. A seventy plus year old rifle that has never been fired? Hitler's house? Run away!

I wouldn't run away till I inspected the rifle...perhaps it is all matching in really good condition, you never know, but that story.... I'm looking for one in good condition and if it has papers even better

Hitlers house in Munchen? Right up there with "War storys I have heard"

As best I rekolect he only had an apartment at Thierschstraße 41. But the rifle being taken from his Munich house is the best one I have heard in a long time. Right up there with shooting an SS officer ,during the Battle Of The Bulge , and taking a chained dress dagger off his body.

That might be because you haven't read about the Berghof helmet:

Thanks for the replies. As usual, there will be folks there who will bid it up to the sky. Last gun auction I went to was a few years ago. It was a collection of Lugers. Even the common ones went for a lot. Left empty handed.

I suspect the reason it still looks so good is Hitler meticulously wiped it down every day with a pair of Eva's panties!

Blued buttcap and early milled bands on what appear to be a later stock? It's a good think this one escaped your collection.

I assume that, not referring to the gun up for auction, there must have been some mint unfired Mausers that were brought back by Allied soldiers, either from factories or storage units. Anyone ever had the pleasure of seeing or owning one? Based on the info from a US Marine vet who fought in the South Pacific, he said that when WWII ended, they were ordered to dump crates of ammo and new 1903 rifles into the ocean. Was the same done with captured German weapons?

From the one poor pic it is not possible to tell much about this rifle. To me it looks like the tag was written with a felt pen. If you really want this get much more info. Good luck.

I believe they were all factory test fired as part of the "proofing" process. That being said there were probably a number of rifles that were never fired after that. There were probably many late war produced rifles that were not fired after proofing because the transportation system had been blown to bits and they just sat in their crates awaiting capture.

The stock looks like someone screwed with it.

                              Stained maybe?
