Trying to find reasonably priced ammo for my mauser, can anyone tell me if I can use 8X57JR rounds in this gun?

8X57jr will have a rim on it.
If you have a military K98 it will require rimless ammo.
it can probably shoot the interwar i or j slightly narrower bullet with no issues - .318 instead of .323 - but the fact that the r marked ammo has that sticking out rim will likely be a problem chambering.
I have a 1920's sporter, and down to the treaty of Versailles Germany had to produce their hunters in these weird sporter rounds, even if they were based on a g98 action.
So mine is marked 7,8X57mm and will cycle and shoot only 8X57i or j effectively.
If you are looking for 8mm to shoot in a k98 go on GB or to any of the major surplus distributors and buy Yugo 8mm, Romanian 8mm or if you are definitely not shooting a semi auto, the Turkish 8mm is still cheap.
Be sure to clean your rifles bore at the range after shooting, and you're good to go.
I recommend buying as much as you can, as I don't think there are many sources after this dries up.
