    help with an old luger

    hi
a german dropped this by today and I have since returned it after taking a few pics as to me its a real working firearm.
he states found it in the loft in an old oily rag. he has cleaned it as you can see by pics as in some areas heavily pitted by old rust etc

now I have taken pictures of what I thought you would need.

any information would be great like age etc etc

I have tried to do searching on the web but I am not sure what I am actually looking for

the luger seems to be very sparce on markings eg none on the barrel etc
I thought most component parts would of been serial stamped etc

    thanks in advance

The Luger is a Luftwaffe Issue Heinrich Krieghoff manufactured P-08 a very desirable luger.. Condition is not the best but a great historical piece... What is the markings on the top of the receiver it could be a letter or a date... The small eagle on the weapon should have a small 'L' on the breast....BILL

                  Commercial Krieghoff

Appears to be an early 4 inch P numbered series 1 commercial krieghoff made from rejected military components as seen with the 5 star rejection stamp. Serial Number starts with P. Possibly circa 1938/9. Crown N commercial proofing. Most are 9mm some 7.65. Very rare & desirable pistol.

so could be a rare bird as we say.
next question is the only way to keep this is for the owner to deactivate it
as it is in Germany it is of no commercial use to anyone due to the tight gun laws etc
as it is a rare variant my thoughts are worth paying for it to be deactivated

what are your views on this matter to deactivate or not ?

What a dilemma - whatever you decide you need to stay legal here.

It reminds me of a similar discovery in the UK a few years ago, fortunately I was able to bring the S code Luger a few miles offshore & it saved deactivation.

I think I will advise him to have it deactivated as then it can be kept legally and on show instead of most probably being hidden away by the family again for another 70 years.

what he decides is his decision and I am no longer part of that

one nice moment was that he actually came to me and I was able to hold it and be able with your help to advise him what he actually has

so a big thankyou to you all for helping

Don't let it deactivate. That would be another destroyed piece.
Why not thinking of getting a collector's license? Is that not possible in germany?

Good point I do not know the German laws on these
The guy does have a hunters licence for a rifle he has
I will keep you all updated on what he decides

Looks like a DWM with black plastic stocks.

Is there a date across the top of the chamber?

Is there a marking on the front toggle?

Any markings on right side of receiver?

A serial number and letter on front of frame?

What caliber? (7.65 or 9 mm)
