I guess it would be possible but very un-likely IMO. I think more likely is that the rifles were sent up to a SS arms depots/ repair facility had the scopes mounted and were sent back. The facility supporting Wiking may have even been hundreds of kilometers in the rear depending on where Germania/Wiking was at the time or maybe not. The soldier may have thought or even been told that they were going to the factory.....

This is always the problem with first person vet accounts. I can tell you from talking to many vets and even being one myself that what many (including me) think happened was not in fact what did happen!
