Very hard to tell from pics. Looks like its missing the rear AA flip up sight, the buttstock shape is closer to german then Yugo...but I cant be definitive without better pictures. The serial number in the stock was either done post war by the Bundeswehr, Yugo etc but that doesnt mean its not genuine WW2 wood. The receiver markings are correct, so you at least know the receive is authentic.

Butt looks post war (no original butts were serial numbered), missing the rear AA finger sight and refinished post war. You will need to get better pics though for more details. Other working parts inside are most likely going to be post war as well I should think.

Hello Fab I think you have the wrong Rob here.

I have yet to fulfil my dream of obtaining a real MG42.

To import a receiver part into New Zealand I would need to jump through piles of paperwork and permits and I have never applied for one.

Besides I would never in my desperation have an MG53, or parts! Sorry if I just offended MG53 collectors..!

Hey Guys, Rob is a good guy, he has never had any interest in M53's so I feel fab may have the wrong person. Also three years ago Rob was not collecting MG's as he is fairly new to the world of collecting and is very selective about what he buys.

Rob the MG is about the same as every other one on the market at the moment,ie refinished with the possibility on numerous new or mixed and matched parts fitted. There is one in similar order currently for sale in Wellington (or at least it was for sale a few months ago) which just like the rest of them is being touted as "original"

If you can bare the refinishing and If the price is right it would be worth buying and could always be resold at a later date as the reality is an MG42 is an MG42 in most collectors eyes and most are unconcerned or just plain unaware of the post war history.

Have seen these recently enter the market via a few sources I am aware of.

Thanks Andrew, from PM's it seems Fab concluded there is only one collector of MG42's named Rob in New Zealand so it must be me. Then he asked how many people I know named 'rob' or 'robs' collect MG42's in NZ! I don't think he realises NZ has a population of over 4 million.

Yes I've passed up a few already but will settle on a MG42 Yugo example for now. The one shown here is the one being imported from US by someone on gunstuff. Indeed I'm passing on this one and I'm grateful again for the WAF advice.
