    Recommended Rifle

Well, after several trips to the police department licensing division office (which is only about 45 minutes away by subway) I almost have my New York City Rifle/Shotgun permit. I'm still trying to get the theatrical permit for my non-guns, which I was previously told you don't need but now I found out you do need!

Anyway...after all this (which was done mostly to bring my grandfather's collection back home) I pretty found out that the M1s might be a problem. He had a mint Enfield MkIII unissued and unfired. So obviously I don't want to shoot that one. And if I can't bring the M1s...well, now I have no rifle to shoot.

So...should I buy a Springfield or a K98? Which is a better causal shooter? Which is easier to get ammo, etc.? Any other recommendations?

Goodness, that is a (pardon the pun) loaded question. Each is a wonderful firearm and both make fine shooters. It is my personal experience that the M1 is a more enjoyable rifle to shoot but I love the look and history of the K98.

Ammo prices can vary depending on what you are looking for. Quality hunting or match grade ammo will be cheaper for the 30-06 but cheap surplus target ammo will be cheaper for the 8mm. Be careful of the later as most are corrosive and your rifle will need a good cleaning rightaway after some range time. Finding the ammo for those rifles is not a problem, both are pretty common rounds.

Thanks Jason. The fear is that the M1 might not be allowed in NYC. The bayonet lug is a problem believe it or not. So if I can't bring the M1 into the city I will buy a rifle. So I didn't know whether the K98 would be more fun than the Springfield bolt action rifle. I hope the M1 won't be a problem...but I'm having to pay $140 yearly just to have NON-Firing guns!

Well, with a Springfield (03-A3?) your choices of factory ammunition are greater and that can be half the fun.
